Thanks to an astounding response to our Emergency Appeal, we've now received £930,000 in donations and share purchases. The Railway has now received over £900,000 in donations and share purchases. We are deeply grateful to every single person who has come to the rescue, but unfortunately we are now facing another lockdown and a period when we will be closed.

We did manage to re-open the Railway during the summer on a limited capacity service, and were beginning to recoup some of the income for this year,  but what has become clear is that we face a longer term and more serious threat than we could have envisaged.

The huge loss of income to the SVR while it remains closed during our peak running season means we won’t be able to make our crucial annual investment into the Railway. This amounts to £4.5million, and would fund essential restorations to our infrastructure and rolling stock, along with apprentice training and a desperately needed overhaul of our IT infrastructure which is creaking at the seams.

It may be that we won’t see a return to sustainable levels of passenger revenue until well into next year. The future for the SVR is challenging. But we are not going to give up the fight.

Instead, with our Fight Back Fund, we will continue to fundraise for the SVR’s recovery both during the current crisis and in the tough months that will follow the lifting of restrictions. We are actively seeking further donations to this fund because fighting back is what we’re known for. Our pioneering preservationists did it when they brought the line back from ruin in the late 1960s; we managed it following the devastation of the storms in 2007; and with your help now, we’ll do it again.

We are approaching trusts and grant-making organisations to ask for support at this difficult time. Some of these know us well, having already contributed to the Falling Sands Viaduct restoration project, apprentice training or our Access for All carriages.

We’ve never needed your help more than we do now. Please donate to the SVR’s Fight Back Fund

At this time of national emergency and widespread worry, it is difficult to ask for your help. However, a lack of income from passengers will mean the SVR will suffer. Please will you donate to our Fight Back Fund to protect the Railway during this crisis and in the difficult months ahead?

For taxpayers we can apply for 25% Gift Aid, at no extra cost to you, which makes this a very efficient way of giving.
